Ørsted launches Ocean Wind lidar buoy

UNITED STATES: Developer Ørsted has started measuring wind and wave conditions to determine the best turbine locations for its Ocean Wind project off the coast of New Jersey.

The developer has deployed a floating lidar (light detection and ranging) system from monitoring specialist Axys Technologies roughly 18km from Atlantic City.

Axys’ Flidar wind sentinel device can gather data on wind speed, direction and turbulence at turbine hub-height and across the blade span, the company stated.

The buoy can also measure surface wind speed and direction, directional waves, ocean currents, tide, water temperature and salinity, atmospheric pressure and air temperature.

It operates autonomously and is powered by its own renewable energy system, Axys added.

By collecting various strands of data, Ørsted hopes to determine the best turbine locations and technology to be installed at Ocean Wind.

The developer acquired the rights to the site from RES Americas Developments in 2015.

The planned 1GW Ocean Wind site would be the state’s first utility-scale offshore wind farm.

New Jersey aims to have 3.5GW of offshore wind farms by 2030, and a 1.1GW tender is planned, but no date or further details have been announced.

Earlier this year, the developer contracted unexploded ordnance (UXO) management firm Ordtek to carry out a survey for Ocean Wind.
