The move has been made in recognition of what AWEA called the "close policy alignment" between the two trade bodies. The groups believe that working under the umbrella of AWEA will give their advocacy work more impact.

In order to increase its offshore wind focus, AWEA is to establish an offshore wind strategic committee for developers, which will act as a steering committee for its offshore wind working group.

The Offshore Wind Development Coalition was set up in 2009 to lobby on behalf of the offshore wind industry and was focused on achieving regulatory and revenue certainty for its members.

The merger comes at a time when the US offshore market finally appears to be making progress towards the realisation of the first offshore wind projects in American waters.
