Nordsee 1 deal sets stage for grid agreement

REpower contract includes turbine installation & commissioning

RWE Innogy has fulfilled a key regulatory requirement that brings it closer to striking a grid connection agreement for its Nordsee 1 project with transmission system operator, TenneT.

The utility must secure a provisional cable connection pledge for Nordsee 1 by 30 November, according to the terms of its construction permit. This stipulates that RWE must provide suitable proof that the offshore wind station is likely to be built, before it can conclude negotiations with TenneT.

This week’s news that RWE has awarded a turbine purchase contract to REpower for Nordsee 1 is one element of such suitable proof.

Additionally, RWE must agree preliminary supply contracts for foundations, an offshore electricity substation and inter-array cabling.

Other milestones to be met by RWE include an unconditional cable connection offer by 31 May 2013, and proof that turbine foundations will be available for the 2014/15 construction season - to be submitted by 1 July 2013.

Windpower Offshore understands that REpower’s Nordsee 1 contract includes a range of services beyond simply supplying 54 6MW turbines. REpower will also be responsible for port logistics and management, vessel loading and unloading, and turbine installation and commissioning.

A post-installation service agreement has not been agreed with RWE. However, "this doesn’t mean that one won’t be clinched in the future," said an REpower spokesperson.
