A offshore wind workboat supplier that undertook its first job last summer is experiencing strong demand, with its fleet fully booked over the coming months.
Established in 2010, Seacat Services's first job was the supply of workboats for Nexans at Anholt offshore wind farm. The result has been a multi-year contract with the cable company. The contract was agreed following successful deployment of three vessels – Endeavour, Reliance and Vigilant – at Anholt.
The long-term deal with Nexans means Seacat workboats will work on West of Duddon Sands, Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Westermost Rough, confirmed Seacat managing director, Ian Baylis, speaking with Windpower Offshore. Seacat has also supplied a boat to BMSC for work on the 288MW Meerwind Süd/Ost project, currently under construction.
“We’re seeing a lot of interest from the German offshore wind market,” confirms Baylis, adding that Seacat’s high-specification boats and full suite of management system accreditation are attractive to German clients operating under “stringent regulations”.
Meanwhile, Seacat’s Resolute is working at Greater Gabbard, supporting operation and maintenance (O&M) work.
Seacat’s location on the Isle of Wight, off England’s south coast, has also led to initial enquiries to support French offshore wind projects. Baylis recognises that long-term contracts from French clients are unlikely to emerge, given the tendency of French clients to choose domestic suppiers. Nevertheless, he hopes Seacat may win some early, small jobs in French waters.
With four workboats in operation and two more due to begin service in the coming months, Baylis admits that the company plans to continue a “controlled expansion of our fleet”. To date, all Seacat vessels have been built by Southboats, a shipbuilder also based on the Isle of Wight. Such close proximity means “we can ensure that the finished product is the boat we ordered,” says Baylis.
Southboats was recently bought by Gardline Group, a well-established player in offshore wind workboat supply as well as in environmental and geophysical and geotechnical surveys.
