South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has unveiled a new 5.5MW turbine model, which it codeveloped with AMSC Windtec. HHI and AMSC had previously collaborated on 1.65MW and 2MW onshore wind turbines.
Installation of the HQ5500/140 prototype is planned for mid-2013. The company plans to market the product in two stages: the first will target the domestic market, to be followed by northern Europe in a second phase. Commercial availability is scheduled for early 2014.
Developed for both onshore and offshore applications, the variable-speed pitch-controlled HQ5500/140 model features a three-blade rotor with 140m diameter. Wind speed is quoted at 11.75m/s.
A specific power rating of 357W per square metre gives a medium value within the range of 300-380W per square metre which is typical of several 4MW+ offshore turbine models that have been introduced recently.
The compact drivetrain comprises a cast main carrier as main structural element. It incorporates a flanged three-stage gearbox and main shaft that comes as a semi-integrated assembly. A high-speed generator is mounted on a separate bolted-on generator frame.
AMSC offers a choice between a permanent magnet generator (PMG) and a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). HHI selected the PMG option, which comes with a full (100%) power converter.
