Dong gives Race Bank go-ahead and signs cable deal

UK: The future of the 580MW Race Bank is confirmed as Dong Energy agrees final investment decision (FID). JDR Cables is awarded an inter-array cable deal for this and two other projects.

The project looks set to use Siemens' 6MW turbine, after the German manufacturer was named as preferred supplier to the project. The turbine order, however, is still conditional on a final agreement.

Siemens' 6MW turbine was first used at Dong's Westermost Rough offshore project, also off the UK's east coast.

Dong said it would obtain a renewables obligation subsidy in the UK, opting against bidding under the contracts for difference (CfD) support mechanism.

In December 2013, Dong bought the rights to Race Bank from Centrica for £50 million (€60 million). The move came after the project failed to qualify for the early, final-investmend-decision-enabling CfDs handed out in April last year.

At the time of the acquisition, a Dong spokesperson said: "We expect it will be funded under CfD. However, this depends on the project's timeline."

Alongside the final investment decision, the developer has also agreed a framework agreement with UK cabling firm JDR.

The Scottish firm will supply interarray cabling for three offshore projects, including Race Bank. A Dong spokesperson was unable to confirm the other projects included in the framework agreement.

The deal was signed today at the RenewableUK Global Offshore Wind conference in London.

Race Bank is located 27 kilometres off England's east coast. It is expected online in 2018, according to WPO Intelligence, the data division of Windpower Offshore.
