Siemens commissions 800MW BorWin2

GERMANY: Siemens has handed over its first German North Sea grid connection, BorWin2, to operator Tennet, drawing a line under the costly installation.

Tennet has now accepted the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) platform, following the completion of test runs by Siemens. The 800MW grid connection is now in commercial operation.

Siemens has made around €800 million in losses related to four offshore wind connections it has been developing in the North Sea, including BorWin2, due to delays largely related to adverse weather. The company said this week that it would try to recover some of the costs.

The connection is currently only serving the 400MW Global Tech 1 project.

The platform is 51 metres wide, 72 metres long and 25 metres high. With its foundation it weighs around 16,000 tonnes. Siemens installed BorWin2 at the 39-meter-deep location 100 kilometres from shore in April 2014.

Siemens is now implementing four North Sea grid connection projects for Tennet. These are the 576MW HelWin1, 690MW HelWin2, 900MW BorWin3, and 864MW SylWin1.
