XEMC Darwind still in frame for Fishermen's project

UNITED STATES: Fishermen's Energy has said it is still considering using XEMC Darwind turbines on its 25MW demonstration project off the coast of New Jersey.

A spokesperson for the developer said that it has not ruled out the turbine manufacturer but is in talks with a number of other suppliers for the project.

The claim follows reports this week that Fishermen's had ruled out using the XEMC Darwind 5MW turbines it originally lined up, looking instead at either Siemens or Vestas machines.

What is clear is that XEMC Darwind's relationship to the project has changed. The company originally joined the venture as the key financial backer as well as a turbine supplier.

But the refusal by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) in March to give the project the go ahead, meant that the conditions of the deal with XEMC Darwind were broken, allowing the developer to consider other suppliers.

Fishermen's Energy will take its case back to the BPU on 21 November after a court found that the regulator had overestimated the expected cost of the power from the project.
