Axys Technologies' floating Lidar set for US coast

UNITED STATES: A floating Lidar system supplied by Axys Technologies will deployed off the east coast of the United States.

Axys will provide a WindSentinal floating measuring device to the site to help develop an offshore wind project proposed for the area. Details of the customer and the project have not been released.

The floating Lidar will use laser-measuring equipment to evaluate wind speed and direction up to 200 metres above sea level and collect metocean data, such as tidal and ocean current information.

International accounts manager at Axys, Chad MacIsaac said the lidar cuts the cost of wind assessment "by a factor of ten".

"One of the key objectives of this project is demonstrate how wind power can be generated offshore in the United States at a cost comparable to conventional generation sources," MacIsaac said.

The first offshore wind project is yet to be installed but a number of developments, including the 30MW Block Island and the 468MW Cape Wind - both on the east coast - are nearing construction.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management recently awarded US Wind the lease to develop a site off Maryland.
