James Fisher develops 'faster' offshore turbine oil change

UK: James Fisher Renewables has said that it has developed a new method for changing offshore turbine gearbox oil that will improve efficiency.

The transfer system allows the direct extraction and refill of offshore turbine gearbox oils from a conventional access vessel.

This means that the entire evacuation, flushing and refill of the gear oil system can be completed in less than four hours, compared with up to two days by conventional methods, the marine services company said.

The system employs vacuum, preheating and filtration technology to transfer the oil from a deck-mounted unit, through hoses. This eliminates the need to fill and hoist containers via the nacelle crane.

A trial of the new technique was recently conducted at an unnamed wind farm off England’s east coast.
