Kitty Petra will be made to the same specification as its three sister vessels, Ginny Louise, Eden Rose and Tia Elizabeth, and is expected to arrive in the UK in spring 2014.

The personnel transport vessels can reach speeds of 27 knots and are used to take technicians to maintain the 317MW Sheringham Shoal offshore wind plant off England’s Norfolk coast in the North Sea.

Sheringham Shoal is between 17 and 23 kilometres from the shore and comprises 88 Siemens 3.6MW wind turbines.

The British company said the vessels can operate up to 241 kilometres from shore. It provides four crew and twelve passengers with beds, bathrooms and internet access enabling engineers and technicians to live and work on it for several days.

Tidal Transit’s commercial director, Leo Hambro, said: "Activity associated with offshore wind farms in the waters surrounding the UK is frenetic.

"Construction is scheduled to commence on at least five other major offshore wind energy power plants off the coast of Lincolnshire and East Anglia over the next 18/24 months, and there is already a demand for suitable vessels to support these projects for tasks including seabed surveys and met-mast installation and maintenance."
