Vattenfall interested in large Danish projects

Horns Rev in sights of second-largest offshore operator

An upcoming tender for the 400MW Horns Rev 3 project is of interest to world's second-largest owner of offshore wind installed capacity Vattenfall, Windpower Offshore has learned.

Vattenfall's operational assets include a 60% stake in the 160MW Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm. With the third phase of the Horns Rev series due to be built, Vattenfall is naturally considering a bid, explained Vattenfall wind power communications manager, Arne Rhabek.

The company is also considering a bid for Denmark's largest offshore wind farm, the 600MW Kreigers Flak project, he added.

Construction tenders for Horns Rev 3 and Kreigers Flak are planned for 2015 with full commissioning expected by 2020, although the Danish government continues to debate the exact timing.

Making progress on its UK joint venture with ScottishPower Renewables to begin building the up to 7.2GW East Anglia zone is high on Vattenfall's list of priorities, but it has other, smaller offshore projects closer to completion.

It will begin building the Dan Tysk offshore wind farm in German waters early next year. Once this is completed, Vattenfall hopes to move on to construct its next German project, Sandbank.

Installing new onshore wind capacity also remains important to Vattenfall, said Rhabek. This represents a key difference between the Swedish company's wind strategy and that of the world's largest offshore wind player, Dong.
