GL Garrad Hassan wins Rhiannon met mast contract

Instrumentation commissioned for Round 3 project

Instrumentation for a meteorological mast for the 2.2GW Rhiannon zone of the UK Round 3 Irish Sea offshore wind zone will be designed, supplied, installed and operated by GL Garrad Hassan.

The contract has been awarded by Celtic Array, the joint venture created by Centrica and Dong Energy, which hold the right to develop the Irish Sea zone. The news represents the latest step forward for the project since last July’s submission of an environmental impact assessment scoping report to the UK Planning Inspectorate. Initial public exhibitions outlining the Rhiannon plans have been taking place this month in North Wales.

No contracts have yet been awarded for the construction and installation of a foundation structure, Celtic Array told Windpower Offshore, adding that "it is too early to provide timescales for installation."

The met mast will be located 15km north of the island of Anglesey. In addition to a "full suite" of meteorological measurement equipment, the structure will also feature a power supply system and navigational aids, said GL Garrad Hassan. "We’re delighted to be delivering to this high profile Round 3 project and having the opportunity to use what our Measnet-accredited measurement group has learnt over the past decade from working in the challenging offshore environment in the Irish Sea, North Sea, Baltic and Canada," said Colin Morgan, GL Garrad Hassan’s head of offshore wind practice.
