195MW online at Bard Offshore 1

Vessel collision not causing serious delay to construction

Completion of the 400MW Bard Offshore 1 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea is on the horizon, with just under half of the project’s planned capacity now online. Seventy-two foundations are in place and 44 of 80 turbines are installed. Of these, 39 are commissioned and generating electricity, according to Peter-Heinrich Boysen, responsible for technical operations at the financially-troubled developer, Bard Holding.

Boysen was speaking at a conference on offshore wind energy operation in Hamburg, organised by the German federal wind energy association (BWE). Offshore construction of Bard Offshore 1 began in 2010.

Last weekend’s minor collision of offshore service and supply vessel, Natalia Bekker - owned by Bard - with one of the project’s foundations is not causing any serious delay, said Boysen. The turbine in question had not yet been commissioned. As previously reported by Windpower Offshore, the collision took place at about 2:00 on the morning of 16 February 2013.

Despite its financial problems, Bard has not given up on plans to proceed with its next permitted project in the North Sea, the 400MW Veja Mate offshore wind farm. "But it has to be financed and the demands for financing are extreme," acknowledged Boysen. An extension to the deadline by which construction of Veja Mate must begin was recently granted by German regulators.
