Hong Kong Electric offshore data campaign completed

Lower-cost lidar solution provided by SgurrEnergy

A year’s worth of ‘bank grade’ data has been delivered to Hong Kong Electric (HK Electric) by its advisor, SgurrEnergy. The utility is considering building an offshore wind farm near the island of Lamma.

SgurrEnergy’s wind measurement campaign began in March 2012, with data since verified by DNV Kema. The project represents the first time that a full-scale wind measurement campaign has not used cup anemometers as reference instruments. By demonstrating the acceptability of data collected by its Galion lidar and by doing away with cup anemometry, SgurrEnergy avoided the need to install a traditional hub-height meteorological mast.

Commenting on the project, HK Electric general manager for projects, C K Lau, emphasised the cost savings achieved by the lidar-based approach. "The application of Galion Lidar saves the requirement of constructing a full hub height met mast, hence substantially reduces the overall design requirements of the offshore platform, leading to a drastic reduction in the foundation cost. The foundation design represents a saving of roughly 25% of steel tonnage compared with a foundation designed to support conventional met mast using cup anemometry".

As previously reported by Windpower Offshore, earlier this year SgurrEnergy installed its Galion lidar technology on an Areva turbine at Alpha Ventus. SgurrEnergy is part of energy services-focused Wood Group.
